About me

Hei!

Before you start your search, take a moment to figure out what you need. Full-time support? Part-time care? On-call help? Make a wish list of necessary and preferred characteristics so you can apply the right filters to our search tool.

We'll show you a list of available sitters near you. From there, it's up to you to screen and vet promising candidates, ask for references, organize a personal interview to see if you're a good fit, and get to know them a little. Since sitters write their own profiles, we don't independently verify things like qualifications or certificates, so it's worth confirming those yourself.

First things first – message the prospective babysitter or nanny about any past childcare experience they may have, and ask about references from prior families. Then you can check in with the other parents to see what their impression was of the sitter.

Next, come up with a list of questions that will help you determine if the sitter will be a good match for your family’s needs. Review our 10-Step Guide for Parents for examples of questions to ask candidates during a babysitting interview. Finally, when you’re ready, schedule a convenient time to get together in person for a one-on-one.

There is no standard hourly rate for childcare services. Rather, each nanny or babysitter’s rate is determined by several factors – including their age and level of experience, the number of kids who need looking after, and how far they need to travel for the job.

In order to come up with an appropriate rate, you should first take into account the minimum wage for your area. Then, you might consider offering a higher rate of pay to keep things fair if you’re asking for any help with things like tutoring or chores around the house - or if you know your kids can be a handful for even the most patient of sitters!

Sitly helps you connect with independent childcare providers in your neighbourhood, including babysitters, nannies, and childminders. It's worth understanding the difference before deciding what's right for your family.

- Babysitters usually provide occasional care at your home, for evenings, after school, or whenever you need extra help. Babysitting isn't a separate legal employment status. If you pay someone regularly to look after your children, this still needs to be properly declared.
- Nannies care for your child in your own home, usually on a more regular basis. If you hire them directly, you become their employer, with the usual employment obligations, though this can also be arranged through an agency.
- Childminders typically care for children in their own home rather than yours, often alongside other kids. Childminders need official approval or registration from a local authority before they can legally offer this kind of care.

Sitly does not verify whether someone who describes themselves as a childminder actually holds a valid approval. This is self-declared by the person, not confirmed by us.

It is up to you to decide what suits your situation best, and what to look for. Before engaging anyone, and especially before engaging a childminder, always ask to see their paperwork and check it directly with her before you start.

Sitly isn’t a babysitting agency. We don’t employ sitters, and we do not run background checks on the people who join. Think of Sitly as a neighbourhood hub where families and independent childcare providers find each other. Open access is what keeps the search fast and flexible for everyone.

That means the final judgement is yours. We give you tools to help you make it:

- New members verify their email address when they sign up
- We offer optional ID verification, so members can confirm they are who they say they are
- Sitters can add a background check certificate to their profile themselves, and you can ask to see it in person
- We provide reviews from other families
- Our team performs manual reviews when something is reported or flagged

None of this replaces your own judgement. Ask your potential babysitter about past experience, speak to families they’ve worked for, and always hold an interview in person before you decide.
